I had similar problems with a Bora 1.6 a few years back, also intermittently cut out when slowing on motorway off-slip. Turned out to be the crank position sensor after a master tech checked it.
I have a 2003 Mk4 VW Golf 1.6 16v with about 148000 on the clock. I have posted before detailing my rough idle problem but this was sorted by having the throttle body cleaned and reset. It was fine for around 250 miles and now seems to be back but strangely goes away with the AC on .

Hi guys, sorry to jump on board this thread but my 1998 VW golf 1.6 SE also failed it’s MOT today on emissions . My golf is high mileage at 182,658 but she runs very well and is up and down the M3 as part of my daily 56 mile commute. It failed across all the emission tests and results were: Fast Idle 1 CO % Vol 4.242 HC ppm vol 883 Lambda 0.871

I had the dealer check it and they said it was find, but I didn't believe them still thought I was having problems with it. I read somewhere if you can remove the oil cap, feel suction and the car shutters while at idle the pcv valve it good which my car did when I removed the oil cap.

My VW Golf mk 4, 1.6 for no reason will cut out / stall, no warning given but full set of warning lights will show and my power steering is dnied once it restarts, it just has 60,000 miles done and always serviced by VW garage. Please, can anybody advise me.
