You basically need a switched live fuse and a hard wire kit with fuse piggyback. You won't need a 12v socket and connector, the kit replaces the complete power lead. Choose a switched live fuse that does not serve any of the main safety features of the car, for example air bags or abs etc. I installed a dash cam into my mk4 hatchback using an add a fuse into the cigar lighter fuse on the fusebox and grounded it on the grounding bolt on the passenger footwell. However, now both my cigarette lighters are dead. Nada. Nothing. It wound help to know the MK and year or your car but its only a two minute job to check, the fuse box on a focus is located behind the glove box I believe, to access it open the glove box and reach up to the back left side and disconnect the dampener arm, then pull the sides of the glove box into the centre to release the stays then lower it a bit and pull it backward

I purchased a cigarette socket phone charger for my 2006 Volkswagen Polo. When plugging the charger into the socket in the dashboard console, with the engine switched off, the charger would not work. Once the engine was turned on the charger worked fine. I presumed that cigarette chargers worked when the car was switched off. Please could you confirm whether there might be a problem with the
