I really liked krussell's thread comparing the 1090R and 1290R, so I thought I'd start an equivalent thread for their road-oriented counterparts. First let me say I cannot hold a candle to krussell's commitment to the cause: I haven't bought both bikes just to compare them. The later 1090/1290 of which the 1290 SAT and SAS also had electronic suspension the spindle carriers were beefier, and those with a single spring, it was rated at around13N/mm. Those without electronic suspension had a spring in each fork rated at 6.0N/mm each, which was much better and was observed to be stiffer by riders who came from the Speed table for 2014 KTM 1190 R Primary drive ratio = 40r76 Rear Wheel Circumference = 2086 mm (KTM) > Hard. Core. (1090/1190/1290) > Style Black Responsive (Orange) Location: New York City. So, here are the steps, overall: Strip down bike, remove valve covers. Rotate rear cylinder to TDC, and measure clearances. Rotate front cylinder to TDC, and measure clearances. Adjust if necessary. Things I've noticed KTM has changed which make my jor easier than on the 950: I’ve had an 1190 before, loved that bike, but tempted by the 1290 instead. My main concern is how much wider the 1290 looked at the dealership vs how wide I remember my 1190 being. Width being the concern as I’m tall enough for either but will be weaving through a lot of London traffic with ever decreasing gaps, don’t want to be stuck Ive used both styles. Open free flow airbox with shorter velocity stacks on road racing bikes where I am at high rpm most of the time and moving fast the whole time. Closed airbox and standard/standard tuned velocity stacks for every day and for an off-road adventure bike. #8.
I'd say it depends on what appeals to the buyer. 1190 has a bit more power and has more electronics. The 1090 is slightly simpler. The 1090 may have an improved airbox and possibly better rear shock. The 1190 is a known platform and not a first year run. #5. Zugg Zugg and KTM 1190advR like this.
